Gov Matawalle has stolen N70bn Zamfara state funds, EFCC alleges
Outgoing Governor of Zamfara Statr, Bello Matawalle, has been accused of stealing a whooping sum N70 billion belonging to the state government between 2019 and 2023.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) which made this known on Thursday said that it was investigating the governor over the alleged financial fraud.
A chieftain of the EFCC, Osita Nwajah, made the disclosure while addressing journalists at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.
Periscope International recalls that Matawale recently publicly accused the anti-graft agency of bias and corruption following an investigation which the EFCC embarked on against his administration.
According to the governor, the EFCC should also probe people working with President Muhammadu Buhari, including federal cabinet ministers, adding that the anti-graft organizations had been too timid to go after people loyal to the president.
Matawalle also recently attacked President Buhari as being disloyal to the ruling APC and was responsible for the party’s shortcomings in some states during the February 25 general elections in the country.
However, the EFCC has denied the allegations of bias in its prosecution of corruption cases, saying that Matawalle was merely distracting it the from carrying out its constitutional responsibilities.
