Ex-Anambra Governor says late Dr Akunyili was killed alongside 8 others
Peter Obi, Ex-Anambra State governor and ex-vice-presidential running mate, has said that Dr. Chike Akunyili, husband of former Minister of Information, Prof Dora Akunyili, was killed alongside eight other victims during the attack, some of whom were headless and unidentifiable.
Obi in a statement, said he and a son of the deceased went to the Iyienu Hospital, Ogidi near Onitsha where they both identified the remains of Dr. Chike Akunyili, who was his kinsman, in the morgue, adding that the incident was underreported.
“He was not the only victim, there was his driver and police security aide. About nine people in all were killed in the shooting on Tuesday, and some of them were even headless, and it is now a problem identifying their remains.
“I was lucky to get the first flight, and I landed in Owerri and moved straight to Iyienu Hospital in Onitsha, where I and his son identified him in the mortuary,” Obi said.
Obi said the killing of Akunyili who was a private medical practitioner remains a great pain to him and members of the Agulu community, where he (Obi) and the late Akunyili both hail from, stressing that the deceased was an easy-going man.
“It is a very sad thing to think of. If you know Dr Akunyili, you will know that he cannot hurt anyone, not here in his village and not anywhere else. He was a good man who was so happy with himself,” the former governor said.
Periscope International recalls that the late Dr Akunyili was shot dead on Tuesday by some gunmen while he was returning from Onitsha where he had gone to receive a post-humous award for his late wife, Dora Akunyili.
The late Dora Akunyili was also the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drugs Adminstration (NAFDAC) before she was appointed as a minister.
