Lalong, Jega meet, express commitment to strengthen security at UNIJOS

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong and former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega, who is the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Jos, have expressed their commitment towards stepping up security and improving transportation for members of staff and students of the University.

The two leaders made this known in Jos on Thursday during a meeting between the governor and Jega’s team which paid a courtesy visit to the governor at Govt. House, Jos.

Gov Lalong expressed his appreciation to the Pro-Chancellor for his contributions in improving education in Plateau, having also served as Pro Chancellor of the Plateau State University, Bokkos.

He disclosed that strategies have already been mapped out to improve security in routes leading to the University and other parts of the State.

The governor further said that efforts were already being made to provide chartered buses  for students, while commercial vehicles would be meticulously screened for registration to operate within the school, to ensure the safety of students and staff of the institution.

Lalong expressed confidence that the ProChancellor would extend his good works and exeperience in school administration and other responsibilities, for the development of the institution.

Speaking earlier, Prof. Jega, who is also the Chairman of the University of Jos Governing Council, said that the students required improved security to  thrive well in their academic activities, stressing that the school was vulnerable during the recent attacks in the state .

“We need continous support and improvement to ensure peace, stability and security within the University and environs for its growth and development,” he said.

Jega said that the university also needed buses which  would operate within the school, to minimise the risk of insecurity which students experience when patronising commercial transportation.

He said improving security in the institution would build the confidence of the students and  staff of the school in their teaching and learning activities .

Gov Lalong’s spokesman, Simon Macham, in a statement, said that Jega applauded Gov Lalong for his efforts towards building lasting peace in the state and for the success of the recently conducted Local Govt Polls.

Prof Jega, he said, urged the governor to continue doing his best  to ensure inclusiveness and harmony in the political terrain while pledging the council’s  support.
